Sun-Kissed Sticker Shock: Skyrocketing Costa del Sol Hotel Rates Cast Shadow on Domestic Tourism

Sunshine Sticker Shock: Spanish Tourists Take a Backseat as Costa del Sol Hotel Prices Skyrocket

Warning bells have been ringing in the travel industry since mid-May, with hotel reservations hitting a standstill and demand from the Spanish tourism market taking a tumble. And now, the data is in, confirming our worst fears. Among the myriad of factors scrutinized for this slowdown, experts have zeroed in on the culprit: the relentless surge in prices.

According to the latest report from Turismo Costa del Sol, drawing on data from Spain's INE national statistics institute, national tourism experienced its first decline since the pandemic recovery began. And what's driving this downturn? A staggering 33% spike in hotel room prices compared to the same period in 2019. Talk about reaching for the sky! These rates surpass the national and Andalusian averages by a whopping ten percent.

In May, a hotel room in Malaga province set tourists back an average of 120 euros, a substantial jump from the pre-pandemic rate of 90 euros. The industry claims this price hike is necessary due to soaring energy costs and an inflationary surge that has hit them like a beach ball to the face.

Adding to the concern, the report reveals that the number of Spanish tourists seeking refuge in hotels dropped by 2.4% last month. However, fear not, dear reader! International travelers have ridden to the rescue, ensuring that overnight stays, average durations, and occupancy rates (currently standing at a sun-drenched 66%) remain robust. In fact, foreigners accounted for a remarkable eight out of every ten guests on the Costa del Sol last month.

Turismo Costa del Sol has pointed out that when it comes to sheer numbers, Spanish globetrotters still reign supreme, followed closely by our dear friends across the pond, the British. It seems the allure of the Costa del Sol continues to captivate, regardless of the financial ripples hitting the sunny shores.
