Junta to Conduct Mosquito Population Surveillance Across Andalucía in Efforts to Curtail West Nile Fever Virus Transmission

Unleashing the Mosquito Hunt: Andalucía on High Alert for West Nile Fever Virus

Prepare for buzzing adventures as Andalucía gears up for an epic mosquito monitoring expedition! A whopping 110 municipalities will be under the mosquito microscope this year, with eight of them getting a special spotlight in the province of Malaga. Their mission? To halt the villainous spread of the dastardly West Nile fever virus.

The Junta de Andalucía, inspired by wisdom from the Ministry of Health, has unleashed an updated Vector Surveillance and Control Programme for the 2023 season. They've carefully analyzed risk levels across the sun-soaked south of Spain, determining the fate of each of the 110 municipalities.

Beware the West Nile fever virus! Roughly 1 in 5 people bitten by its mosquito minions suffer from fever, accompanied by a symphony of headaches, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash. But fear not! Most brave souls recover completely, though fatigue and weakness may loiter around for weeks or months.

Picture a scale of risk levels (NR) in Andalucía, ranging from 0 (least serious) to 5 (most serious). Among the mosquito battlegrounds, 39 municipalities bear the NR 1 badge, while 35 embrace the thrill of risk level 2. The daring 21 communities stand at level 3, with 15 daringly defying danger at level 4. As for the rest of Andalucia, they can savor the sweet safety of risk level 0.

Ah, Malaga! The eight chosen ones from this illustrious province shall embark on their heroic mosquito-monitoring escapades. Seven of them, including Malaga city itself, Archidona, Campillos, Cártama, Casares, Estepona, and Fuente de Piedra, find themselves at alert Level 1. The Junta deems them "predisposed" mosquito magnets. Meanwhile, Behanavís takes a moderate risk stance at Level 3.

But hold your citronella-scented horses! Actions shall vary depending on the risk level of each daring municipality.

Level 1 comes with a flurry of measures, including public communication, information dissemination, and vigilant surveillance of both humans and animals. The battle against mosquitoes is waged through the power of knowledge!

As we ascend to Level 2, our valiant warriors will intensify surveillance of larvae and adults in urban and bustling rural areas. They'll leave no stone unturned in their relentless pursuit of these blood-sucking fiends!

At Level 3, diagnosis becomes more intense, particularly within a 1.5-kilometer radius of urban centers and lively rural spots. Active surveillance even extends to equines, wild birds, and equine holdings, if need be. No corner shall be spared from their watchful eyes!

And finally, at Level 4, the ultimate showdown begins. Human surveillance kicks into high gear, and a distinguished technical committee takes the stage to dissect the situation, brainstorming strategies fit for heroes.

So, gear up, brave souls of Andalucía! Arm yourselves with knowledge, spray your shields with insect repellent, and let the mosquito monitoring crusade commence! Together, we shall conquer the West Nile fever virus and restore peace to the land of sun, sea, and flamenco!
